1st blog of the new year. It's 1/7/2020 and it's
been three weeks since I had to type a blog. Today in class we saw our scores
for the midterms. We also talked about the book "Guns, Germs, and
Steel". The author is Jared Diamond. The book was published in March 1977.
Jared Diamond is a professor at UCLA in Los Angeles. He's a Biologists which is
the study of human physiology. His real passion is to study birds. The book
explains why Eurasian and North African civilizations have survived and
conquered other areas. One factor of this is Geographic luck. This is when you
are born into a well-developed area that is better than other areas. The book
is also showing why white supremacy is wrong. Jared's journey started in Papua
New Guinea. It's located above Australia on an island that looks like a Dino.
Why on the island Jared was presented a question by man named Yali. His
questions was "Why you white men have so much cargo, and we New Guineans
have so little?" Several years earlier the British flew to the island on a
plane and showed their "cargo" to the people. At the time the people
were not using machines for work. They haven't discovered electricity yet, so
seeing something like a plane was shocking to them. When they saw what the
British had they began to wear it as sign of class/power. Some people still
believe power is determined by race.

Today we talked about the effect humans had on the land and how they changed it. For example, Manhattan was a plain island. Not many buildings or skyscrapers reaching into the sky. There wasn't even that many people living on the island. But then they started to build homes and workspace. Now more people came to the island to find a new home or job. When people think of New York city they think about new opportunities. When the buildings were finished, many people came to the city, they started their own businesses. Soon more and more people came, and the population grew. It could be compared to the gold rush in the west when everyone moved out to find fortune. The city is always working and always moving. Now the people of New York city are living life with hope of a better future. They wake up each morning to become a better person than they were yesterday.
We got our tests back today. The class averaged around a 75%. We had notes to use and we still tied with the honors class who didn't have notes. I need to take better notes for my blog. All my notes were in my notebook but we won't use that. We will only be using the blogs. A couple of people got A's on the test. Others not so much. Fun fact every single person who took the test got this one question wrong. It was a trick question that messed with our perception and our thinking. The question had specific coordinates on it, but it doesn't exist in the world. Everyone just took one glance at the numbers and and assumed it was absolute location. It worked because no one got it right, next time we won't be tricked
